Located in Henry County, Indiana, Knightstown is a small town positioned along Big Blue River. The town of 2,182 individuals is situated in Wayne Township and is located about 30 miles from Indianapolis. Knightstown was platted in 1827 and is named in honor of Jonathan Knight who worked as an engineer on the National Railroad. A post office has operated in the town since 1833.
Despite its small size, there are several things to see and do in Knightstown. History enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the many historic sites located throughout the city. The Elias Hinshaw House, Knightstown Academy, and Knightstown Historic District are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Elias Hinshaw House was constructed in 1883. The two-story house was built in the Italian Villa style. Knightstown Academy, constructed in 1876, was originally a Quaker Academy. The gymnasium attached to the building was used as the Hickory Huskers’ home court in the movie Hoosiers. The Knightstown Historic District began developing in the 1830s and is filled with many beautiful, historic buildings. In addition to being to home many historic places and buildings, Knightstown is also notable for having beautiful falls. Both individuals passing through town and residents will enjoy exploring the town in the fall when it is surrounded by beautiful colors.
Since Knightstown is located in a humid continental climate, residents are able to enjoy all four seasons. Winters in the city are generally cold and experience plenty of snow. Daytime temperatures during December, January, and February do not often climb out of the 30s. It will be necessary for individuals to invest in efficient heating systems in order to remain comfortable during the winter.
Although Knightstown’s summers are very cold, the town experiences beautiful summers. June, July, and August have daytime temperature highs that tend to remain in the mid-80s. However, historic thermostat readings in the area have reached into the triple digits. Individuals who are living in town, relocating, or are have just moved should prepare themselves for possible heat wave by investing in efficient cooling systems. During the warmer months of the year an efficient cooling system could literally be a lifesaver.
