Rushville is an Indiana city situated in Rush County and located about 50 miles southeast of Indianapolis. Both Rushville and Rush County were named in honor of Dr. Benjamin Rush, one of many who participated in the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In 1940, Rushville served as the campaign headquarters for Wendell Willkie while he competed for the position of President of the U.S. against Franklin D. Roosevelt. Rushville was incorporated as a city in 1843.
Despite Rushville’s small size, there are many things to see and do around the city. Individuals interested in learning about the city’s history will find the John K. Gowdy House to be of interest. The house, built in 1888, is home to the Rushville Historical Society. In 1993, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located not far from the John K. Gowdy House is Riverside Park. The park, located along the banks of Flatrock River, features beautiful walking trails and is used to host mini concerts. Rushville is also home to a beautiful main street that displays Craftsman and Victorian style homes, beautiful churches, and historic buildings.
Rushville experiences weather that is characterized by cold winters and warm summers. December, January, and February are usually the coldest months of the year. Daytime temperatures during these months vary from the mid to upper-30s on average. At night, temperatures often drop well below freezing. It will be necessary for individuals to invest in efficient heating systems to remain warm indoors during the cooler months of the year.
Summers in Rushville are typically mild, with daytime temperatures ranging from the low to mid-80s on average. However, record thermostat readings have climbed into the triple digits so it will be necessary for individuals to invest in cooling systems that are capable of withstanding plenty of use in emergency situations.
