Situated in the central portion of Indiana, Shelbyville is a Shelby County city located in Addison Township. Shelbyville serves as the county seat of Shelby County. In 1822, Shelbyville was platted. The city is named in honor of Isaac Shelby, the first and fifth Governor of Kentucky. Shelby served in Lord Dunmore’s War, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812. On January 21st, 1850, Shelbyville was incorporated as a city.
According to the 2010 United States Census, Shelbyville has a population of almost 20,000 residents. Younger individuals residing in Shelbyville are served by Shelbyville Central Schools. Shelbyville is also home to a private school.
There are many notable individuals who were born Shelbyville. Thomas Hendricks was born in the city and was the 21st Vice President of the United States. The city was also home to William Garrett, noted Indiana University basketball player. Garrett was the first African American basketball player to compete in the Big Ten Conference.
